SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The University of Notre Dame fencing team hosted the first of two days of the DeCicco Duals on campus on Saturday and the home side put on a clinic. The men’s team turned in a perfect record of 6-0 on the day while the women followed with an impressive mark of 6-1.
A trio of men fencers had standout performances on the day, with at least one from each weapon. David Wozniak turned in a record of 14-1 in epee while Radu Nito finished 10-0 in sabre. The duo of Ziyuan Chen and Philip Dority dazzled in foil as Chen finished a perfect 12-0 while Dority went 11-1.
On the women’s side six different fencers reached double-digit victories on the day, led by Kaitlyn Hulseburg’s unblemished 16-0 performance on the strip in sabre. Emily Chang also excelled in sabre, going 13-1. A trio of Fighting Irish fencers put up big numbers in foil, as Ryanne Leslie (17-1), Josephina Conway (14-0) and Rebeca Candescu (11-0) each had remarkable performances. The women’s epee team was led by Erika Cucala’s mark of 13-2.
The Irish are back in action on Sunday as they wrap up the DeCicco Duals. Notre Dame’s first action of day two will start at 9 a.m. ET in the North Dome of the Joyce Center. Admission is free.
