CARY, N.C. – The University of Notre Dame women’s tennis team earned a 4-1 win over the Syracuse Orange on the second day of the Atlantic Coast Conference women’s tennis championship. The Fighting Irish advance to take on the second-seeded Virginia Cavaliers Friday night in Cary, North Carolina.
The match started with the Irish narrowly taking the doubles point. After Notre Dame’s top team of Julia Andreach and Page Freeman fell by a 6-2 score, Carrie Beckman and Akari Matsuno along with the team of Yasha Yellayi and Nibi Ghosh picked them up. Beckman and Matsuno earned a 6-4 win at No. 2, with Yellayi and Ghosh battling through a tiebreaker to earn the point. The No. 3 match went 7-6, (6) for the Irish as Notre Dame took the early lead.
Singles started with No. 3 Bojana Pozder being first off the court. She dominated her match 6-1, 6-2 before Matsuno earned a straight-set win at No. 6 6-4, 6-3, to put the Irish up 3-0. Yellayi battled to a third set, dropping her matchup at No. 4, but Andreach put the match away with an impressive performance at the top of the lineup. The senior earned her 19th win of the spring season with a 6-7 (2), 6-3, 6-0 win at the top spot to secure the win.
The Irish are back in action this evening as they take on the two-seed Virginia. Notre Dame, having gone 17-8 overall and 7-6 in the league, are currently ranked 28th nationally and earned the seven-seed coming into the tournament. Earlier this season, the Irish dropped a 4-2 matchup to the Cavaliers at the Eck Tennis Pavilion. Virginia enters the match ranked fourth nationally.
