MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The University of Notre Dame women’s tennis team opened up its 2023-24 season last weekend at the Milwaukee Tennis Classic. The Fighting Irish competed against teams from the BIG EAST, ACC, Ivy League, Big Ten, Pac-12 and Big 12 over the weekend.
Friday’s event started with the Irish taking on opponents from Marquette, North Carolina and Brown. Akari Matsuno and Bojana Pozder defeated a pair from Marquette, 6-4. Pozder followed it up with a clean 6-0, 6-0 victory over Emilija Kojcic. Matsuno added another singles victory with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Andie Weise to close the day.
Saturday saw the pairing battle but come up short in three events. Matsuno dropped a three-set battle by an 11-9 final in the tiebreaker set. Pozder also battled to a tiebreaker set, but falling. The pairing also forced an extra point in the doubles competition, but fell 7-5.
The weekend wrapped up with the pair earning two singles victories. Matsuno earned a 6-3, 6-2 over Oklahoma’s Romana Cisovska, and Pozder defeated Wisconsin’s Alina Mukhortova, 1-6, 6-2, 10-5 to conclude the day.
The Irish return to action this weekend as they host the Notre Dame Invitational at the Courtney Tennis Center.
