GREENSBORO, N.C. — The medal count continues to climb for junior freestyler Chris Guiliano.
This week, Guiliano and eight other Notre Dame swimmers competed at the 2023 U.S. Open at the Greensboro Aquatic Center. Guiliano walked away with a bronze medal in the 100 free after posting a time of 48.51.
Guiliano was a finalist in both the 50 and 200 free as well. He tied for 15th in the 50 free prelim with a time of 22.42. He went 22.16 in the B final, good enough for fourth in that heat. In the 200, Guiliano finished second in the C final with a time of 1:49.04. The Pennsylvania native was well under the Olympic Trials cuts in all three of his events.
Notre Dame had a whole group of male sprinters in North Carolina. Abdelrahman Elaraby went 23.08 in the 50 free – his main event — but missed the final. In the 100 back, Tanner Filion and Kaden Smesko placed 30th and 31st with times of 56.53 and 56.64, respectively. Filion was also just off his best time in the 200 back, going 2:04.70 and finishing 34th. In the 100 fly, Cason Wilburn finished 25th with a time of 54.10 in prelims. He went 54.11 in the C final.
Sophia Karras and Grace Brenneman competed for Notre Dame on the women’s side. Karras finished 15th in the 1500 free (16:58.08) and 13th in the 800 free (8:54.03). Brenneman, who broke the 50 free school record last weekend with a meters time of 25.97, finished just off that time in Greensboro. Her 26.00 tied for 41st place. She also swam the 100 free and placed 72nd (57.93).
